Roles of Night City

Your character's "role" is their role in society.

From a young age, they've been invested in something. Likely, they found a great interest in it. Maybe they found it to be the only thing they knew how to do. For some, it wasn't even a choice, forced upon them, and stuck to out of habit.

Whichever it may be, your character's role is their career. It determines the jobs they might seek out, and what spot they fill in a crew.

Choose your character's role wisely!

There are 10 (+1) Roles:

  • Solo
  • Netrunner
  • Fixer
  • Media
  • Rocker
  • Nomad
  • Techie
  • Medtech
  • Corpo
  • Lawman
  • Civilian

Multiroles

Your character can decide that maybe, the career they've followed their entire life just isn't for them. At this point, they can choose to "Multirole." In doing so, you can choose one other role. Choosing to multirole means that you are less capable in both roles, as your character has invested less time in both roles overall.

01

Solo

"When you've been slammin' it on in combat zones for as long as I have, you know just the right move to finesse the Reaper's blade, and put a gonk in the grave."

With a mind for a firefight and a razor sharp instinct to survive, Solos are keenly aware of their surroundings, as well as how to aim just well enough to make it out of a shitshow alive.

They are able to soak up a little more damage, prevent utter disaster in a firefight, react faster than their opponents, aim a little better, see the faults in an enemies defense, and have an overall greater situational awareness. Beware, though. This isn't a miracle 6th sense. It's just enough to get you by.

Character concepts that fall under Solos:

  • Assassins
  • Bodyguards
  • Mercenaries
  • Freelance Hired Guns
  • Corporate Soldiers
  • Combat Cyborgs
  • Terminators
  • Freelance Bounty Hunters
  • Gang Brutes

Server Role Ability: Combat Awareness

In Roleplay, against foes of equal capability, a Solo has a minor combat advantage against those that aren't also Solos.

02

Netrunner

"You don't understand, meatbag. You don't live like us. If you think you do, you're just a poser. When you look at a screen, you see numbers and letters. When we look back at you from the screen, we see all the chrome to fry you with."

Anyone can theoretically netrun, but for anyone who isn't a true Netrunner, it's really the equivalent of thrashing around in the deep end of a pool. It isn't exactly graceful.

Netrunners, on the other hand, are professionals.

Only Netrunners can quickhack or deep dive with actual efficiency, as they are capable of parsing and reading data as if they were reading a book. The better the Netrunner is, the more efficient they become on the NET, performing actions more quickly, uploading programs and hacks with incredible precision, and fending off enemy Netrunners and Daemons with ease.

Character concepts that fall under Netrunners:

  • Hackers
  • Hacktivists
  • Artificial Intelligences
  • Online Criminals
  • Corporate Net Teams
  • Those who use quickhacks/cyber attacks to fight.
  • Internet Trolls
  • Computer Nerds
  • Recluses/Hermits

Server Role Ability: Interface

Netrunners are the only characters that truly dedicate their lives to netrunning and quickhacking. Whereas other characters may still use cyberdecks and may try and netrun, their odds against a true netrunner are much lower when comparing characters of equal reputations.

Netrunning Guide and Items

On Cyberpunk 2080, we have an OPTIONAL guide that sets the standard (but not a ruleset!) for Netrunning. It is recommended (but not required) that you read this if you wish to be a Netrunner. Feel free to ask staff if you have questions about this guide. Note that this guide is optional, and we allow you to roleplay Netrunning as you wish so long as you follow roleplay rules.

03

Fixer

"What you need, ronin? Some new iron? A muscle car to drive off in? Some chrome to seal the deal on a fortune? I know a hot shot in Maelstrom who can provide, but first, let's talk what you can do for me."

Fixers are the lords of Night City. In a metropolis where crime is perhaps almost as powerful as the corporations who try to stamp it out, Fixers know just what strings to pull and exactly who to call on to get things done. Fixers always have a whole portfolio of contacts to call on for sourcing goods, favors, and information, though these contacts often don't do things for free. They know what imports are coming in on the black market, and can source them for cheap, often finding discounts on goods that would otherwise be priced higher than anyone who would reasonably want to pay for. With a silver tongue, they know how to haggle. And if the money and favors dry up? Fixers are always accustomed to their local cultures, which expand as the Fixer grows more able in their skills. They know just how to blend in, see structures, and determine who calls the shots.

Character concepts that fall under Fixers:

  • The Middle Man
  • "That person who knows another person"
  • Mob Bosses
  • The guy who gets shit done.
  • Problem Solvers
  • Intermediaries
  • Drug Dealers
  • Black Market Vendors
  • Kingpins
  • (Soon-to-Be) Lords of Night City

Server Role Ability: Operator

  • In Roleplay, when someone obtains any grade below Grade S, they can roleplay with your Fixer to turn that grade into a "Grade+" item, which can be used to get Grade+ items on the Item List. You as the Fixer obtain a Graded item equivalent to what they turned in.
    • For example: Someone roleplays with your character to turn a Grade A into a Grade A+ item. They obtain the A+ item, while your character acquires a Grade A item.
  • Fixers are capable of hosting gigs from an in-character position, and not only gain far more in terms of rewards, but can gain reputation from it as well. Fixers are capable of making great change happen in Night City.
  • When Fixers participate in a gig itself, they are able to "call in" surprise assistance. Need some reinforcement mercenaries? Want to provide a car for the crew? Set up an NPC sniper on the building over? Fixers can pull wild cards in the middle of RP, reasoning it as them having called it in before. Fixers can call the following in depending on their reputation, which are "used" on the gig and cannot be kept by either the fixer or the crew:
    1. Reputation 0-1: Grade C item or lower.
    2. Reputation 3-4: Grade B item or lower.
    3. Reputation 5-6: Grade A item or lower.
    4. Reputation 7: Grade S item or lower.
    5. Reputation 8: 2 Grade S items or lower.
    6. Reputation 9: 3 Grade S items or lower.
    7. Reputatoin 10: 4 Grade S items or lower.
04

Media

"What we're doing, right here, right now? It's big. Really big. Everyone's gonna know what they did here, and what we did to stop it. These filthy fucks are gonna pay, and we're going to make it big, you and I. Now pull it together and don't get shot in the head. We're about to go live..."

Medias can make or break even the largest organizations. They're always digging where they aren't supposed to. Whether it be a local Gang Lord's secret affair with an uptight Biotechnica executive, to Militech's closet of skeletons being aired out for the world to see, Media's not only know how to find info, but how to present it with the right flair, on the right avenues, to expose the ugly truth to the masses.

Medias always have an ear open to rumors abound, and if they follow that rumor, changes may happen, for better or worse. When they get the scoop they need to break the case, they can present it for the world to see. Small time Medias may only have a meager following, who may not believe them, but the largest Medias can tear a corporation apart.

Character concepts that fall under Medias:

  • News reporters & Anchors
  • Independent Journalists
  • Truth Seekers (Think those YouTube channels that expose people and businesses.)
  • Talk Show Hosts
  • Online Personalities & Influencers

Server Role Ability: Credibility

  1. Medias are able to post on Blog NET , a NET site which hosts blogs, independent gossip, and news. Through these posts, Medias can introduce novelty lore to Night City by making their own localized events. If approved by moderators for their realism and quality, they are reposted to Night City News as they go viral. If 3 Blog NET posts go viral, the Media gains a Grade C item!
  2. When a Media joins a crew for a gig or event, they are able to report on the events that happen there on Blog Net. Should they do so, everyone in the gig who is identified (cover name or real name) receives an additional point of reputation!
  3. Medias are the only way for characters to reach Reputation 9 and 10, as they require the publicity to achieve such popularity.
  4. If a crew runs a gig that involves something described by a Media on Blog NET beforehand, the Media can report on it again, and receive equal payout as those who went on the gig!
