Character Types

01

Normal Characters

Normal characters are average, believable character ideas with tempered power levels on their journey to fame. The most common (but by no means boring!), Normal Characters have the most capability of having an impact on the setting, with the most room to grow.

  • It is highly recommended that you start with a Normal Character.
  • Normal characters start either at the start of their Night City journey, or have a few years under their belt.
  • Normal characters can progress to eventually become more powerful than Chrome Characters.
  • If you wish to play MAXTAC or Trauma Team, please read this:
  • MAXTAC/Trauma Team Character Rules & Standards
02

Exotic Characters

An exotic character is a type of normal character that is highly unusual, but not necessarily more dangerous or potent than an average human being. You are permitted to make these characters, but they may require a higher standard of writing, and you cannot have more than two of them at any given time. This is to prevent an excessive amount of highly unusual characters and prevent a shift in the setting's tone. In other words, unusual characters should remain unusual. Exotic characters include:

  • Characters with Animal Exotic packages (in a word, furries such as KatNip, LupaForm, or AquaForm).
  • Fantasy Exotic packages, including elves, orcs, and ogres.
  • Biotechnica clones and other genetic experiments.
  • Characters that are above the height of 6'6 (198 cm).
  • Any unusual idea that requires some suspension of disbelief.
  • Artificial Intelligences of any variety, including robots and AI assistants, rogue or domestic. (Note: Only 1 of your Exotic Characters may be an AI.) If you are interested in making an AI character, please read:
  • Artificial Intelligence Character Rules & Standards

Exotic characters can start as Chrome characters, adding 1 vote to the review process as described in the Character Creation & Guidelines. However, there are two exceptions: Fantasy Exotic and Animal Exotic packages cannot start as Chrome characters.

03

Chrome Characters

Chrome Characters are characters which are meant to be set pieces, antagonists, and overall obstacles or support for other characters. They begin with a greater amount of power and foundation, but are expected to be non-protagonist. As such, unlike Normal Characters, Chrome Characters may possess all or some of the following traits:

  • Enough combat cybernetics to defeat more than 15 average opponents or equivalent in a single combat situation. This applies mostly to Solos and Netrunners.
  • The ability to lead a larger faction, or lead a larger faction's worth of people. This applies mostly to Fixers, Corpos, Medias, Rockerboys, Nomads, and some Lawmen.
  • Enough skill in a technical field to be among the best in a nation.

However, you should be aware of the following notes about Chrome Characters:

  • Chrome Characters cannot have an impact on the setting, and are held to a higher standard.
  • Chrome Characters have either already achieved their ambition, lost it, or are unable to pursue it any further.
  • They are usually older (30+), and on the tail end of their career or field of work.
  • Chrome Characters are expected to play the role of antagonist or support to Normal Characters.
  • Chrome Characters are intended to be used in plotlines, and thus are expected to be defeated, play as a support or an otherwise crucial role for other characters.
  • Chrome Characters often have the lower priority when it comes to Gigs/Quests and other scenes where a Normal Character may participate. Some GMs may choose to exclude Chrome Characters altogether.

You may have 1 Chrome Character.

04

Quick Characters

Quick Characters are for those who want to start roleplaying as soon as possible. They do not require an application and can be made on the spot, without staff review.

Before making a Quick Character however, please read the following limits that apply to them:

  • Quick Characters cannot out-compete Normal Characters in combat or in competitions of skill. Furthermore, they are "cursed" when it comes to combat, making them inoptimal for combat in general.
  • Quick Characters cannot make significant impacts in Night City that would make headlines in the news, and do not gain reputation.
  • Quick Characters cannot be Exotics, as defined above, or Banned Characters, as described below.
  • Quick Characters cannot hold a position of power that holds influence over more than 5 individuals (NPCs or Characters).
  • Quick Characters may, in the instance where they have chosen to be in an event that has limited character slots, be required to step out if a Normal Character wishes to participate.
  • Quick Characters found to be breaking character rules or these limits may be disallowed by staff. If this is behavior is repetitive, staff may forbid you from playing Quick Characters in general.

If you are a new member with no character and wish to make a Quick Character first, simply ping staff in Creative Discussion and let them know so they can give you the roles to RP. Note that you can make a Quick Character into a Normal Character at any time.

If you already have a character, you do not need to ping staff to make a Quick Character.

05

Canon Characters

You may apply for Canon characters on this server. Canon Characters and their applications are held to a moderate to the highest standard of expectations. We want those who RP canon characters to not only have a good understanding of the English language, but also an understanding of the character they are roleplaying as, as well as the Cyberpunk setting and genre as a whole.

You may have 1 Canon Character. Please speak to staff if you want to apply for a canon character!

You can see what Canon Characters are available here:

06

Banned Characters

Banned characters are banned altogether. You cannot apply for these. If they even exist in the setting, they will be used at the discretion of the staff. Banned characters include:

  • V
  • Adam Smasher
  • Any borg with Adam Smasher's level of augmentation.
  • High-level political leaders, ambassadors, and secretaries whom would have no reason or ability to be within Night City in general.
  • Non-Human Characters who are not AI.
  • Aliens.
  • Ghosts.
  • Any character who uses supernatural abilities or is of supernatural origins.
  • Any character with excessive or especially unrealistic physical power.
  • Characters under the age of 18.

The staff will decide if any of these are to be used, who may use them, and under what circumstances - if they are used at all.
